A Whimsical Unicorn Shoot for a 5-Year-Old Princess

A memorable child portrait session starts with something they genuinely love. For this fifth birthday shoot, we built the experience around a real pony styled as a unicorn, a soft outdoor setting, and enough freedom for the session to feel imaginative rather than overly posed.
I recently had the privilege of photographing one of the most magical child portrait sessions: a 5-year-old girl and a pony dressed up as a unicorn. The setting was pure enchantment: a dreamy open field, soft afternoon light, and a pony turned unicorn, complete with a glittering horn and a mane braided with pastel flowers.
The little one arrived with a small wardrobe of pastel tulle dresses, flower crowns, and eyes wide with excitement. She immediately connected with the "unicorn," gently petting its nose while her dress billowed in the breeze, creating moments that felt straight out of a storybook. From the moment she saw the pony, she lit up with pure joy. And honestly, that’s what these sessions are all about—capturing those fleeting childhood whispers of imagination.
We started with some posed shots, like hugging the unicorn and kissing it’s nose. However, the real magic happened when she led the unicorn across the field, her laughter filling the air as her dress flowed behind her like something from a fairy tale. Her energy was contagious, making every frame feel like a captured memory of childhood wonder.
No need for over-the-top poses or fancy setups—just a simple field, a little bit of imagination, and the authenticity of a 5-year-old living her best life with her new unicorn friend. Days like this remind me why I love what I do.
